Reviewer for Plumbing Sanitation and System Design for the Master Plumber board.
Drainage System Design
The DWV system (Drain-Waste-Vent) carries waste away and admits air. Components: soil pipe, waste pipe, vent pipe, and house drain.
Water Supply Design
Designed to deliver adequate, safe water at proper pressure. Prevent cross-connection and backflow that could contaminate potable water.
Backflow (e.g., a submerged hose) can siphon dirty water into the clean supply โ air gaps and backflow preventers stop this.
Sanitation Principles
Proper design prevents sewer gas, contamination, and disease โ the core public-health purpose of plumbing.
Trap Seal
A trap holds a water seal (usually 2 inches) that blocks sewer gases. Venting protects this seal from siphoning.
Before your exam, make sure you can confidently explain and apply each of the following:
- Drainage System Design
- Water Supply Design
- Sanitation Principles
- Trap Seal
Re-read any section above where you hesitate, then explain it aloud in your own words โ if you can teach it simply, you understand it. Focus your final review on the tables, formulas, and the common-mistake warnings, since those are where most points are won or lost.
