Grade 1 Science

Foundational Grade 1 Science readiness โ€” exploring the five senses, living and non-living things, weather, and taking care of the body.

This reviewer covers the DepEd MELC-aligned Grade 1 Science competencies. Read each section, study the tables, and remember the exam hacks.

1

My Five Senses

We learn about the world using our five senses.

SenseBody PartWhat it does
SightEyesSee colors and shapes
HearingEarsHear sounds
SmellNoseSmell scents
TasteTongueTaste food
TouchSkinFeel hot, cold, soft, hard
2

Living and Non-Living Things

Living things grow, eat, breathe, and reproduce (plants, animals, people). Non-living things do not (rocks, chairs, water).

๐Ÿ’ก Exam Hack

If it grows and needs food and water, it is alive. A toy dog does not eat โ€” so it is non-living.

3

Plants and Animals Around Us

We share the world with many plants and animals. Plants give us food, shade, and clean air. Animals can be pets, farm animals, or wild animals.

GroupExamplesWhere they live
Petsdog, cat, fishat home
Farm animalscow, pig, chickenin a farm
Wild animalslion, monkey, snakein the forest
๐Ÿ’ก Exam Hack

Plants need sunlight, water, and air to grow. Animals need food, water, air, and shelter. Take care of them and they help us too.

4

Weather and Caring for the Body

Observe daily weather: sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy. We wear the right clothes for each kind of weather.

WeatherWhat to wear / do
Sunnyhat, light clothes
Rainyraincoat, umbrella
Cold/windyjacket

Keep the body healthy: eat fruits and vegetables, drink water, wash hands, brush teeth, sleep early, and play or exercise every day.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistake

Do not play under the rain or near floods โ€” you can get sick or hurt. Always tell an adult where you are going.
