This reviewer covers the DepEd Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in Grade 1 Mathematics. Master each topic below to prepare for quizzes, periodical tests, and assessments.
Numbers and Counting to 100
Grade 1 Math starts with whole numbers up to 100. Learners count, read, write, compare, and order these numbers.
| Skill | What to do | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Counting | Count forward and backward by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s | 5, 10, 15, 20โฆ |
| Place value | Tell the tens and ones in a number | 34 = 3 tens + 4 ones |
| Comparing | Use greater than (>), less than (<), equal (=) | 24 < 42 |
| Ordinal numbers | 1st up to 10th position | 3rd in line |
To compare two numbers, look at the tens digit first. The number with more tens is bigger. Only check the ones if the tens are equal.
Addition and Subtraction
Add and subtract numbers with sums up to 100. Learn the meaning of the plus (+) and minus (โ) signs through real objects.
- Addition means putting together / joining.
- Subtraction means taking away / finding the difference.
- Use counters, fingers, or drawings to help.
Watch the sign! Many young learners add when the problem says "how many are left" (which is subtraction). Read the question twice.
Shapes and Measurement
Identify basic 2D shapes and compare objects by size.
| Shape | Sides | Corners |
|---|---|---|
| Triangle | 3 | 3 |
| Square | 4 (equal) | 4 |
| Rectangle | 4 | 4 |
| Circle | 0 (round) | 0 |
Compare lengths (longer/shorter), mass (heavier/lighter), and capacity (more/less) using non-standard units like hand spans and paper clips.
