Head and Neck
The dentist must master head & neck anatomy: the maxilla (upper jaw), mandible (lower jaw, the only movable facial bone), and the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).
The mandible is the only movable bone of the skull โ key for chewing (mastication).
Nerves and Blood Supply
The trigeminal nerve (CN V) provides sensation to the face and teeth; its maxillary and mandibular branches are targeted in dental anesthesia.
Cranial Nerve V
The trigeminal nerve has three branches: ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2), and mandibular (V3). V2 and V3 carry sensation from the upper and lower teeth โ the targets of dental anesthesia.
