DepEd MELC reviewer for Grade 8 Science, Quarter 3. Master the concepts, tables, and common-mistake warnings below.
Particle Nature of Matter
Matter is made of tiny particles in constant motion. States change as particle energy/spacing changes (solid โ liquid โ gas).
Atomic Structure
| Particle | Charge | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Proton | + | Nucleus |
| Neutron | 0 | Nucleus |
| Electron | โ | Around nucleus |
Atomic number = number of protons (defines the element). Mass number = protons + neutrons.
The Periodic Table
Elements are arranged by atomic number. Periods are rows; groups/families are columns with similar properties.
Reading an Element
For Carbon (atomic number 6, mass number 12):
Neutrons = mass number โ atomic number.
Before your test, make sure you can confidently do each of the following:
- Explain and apply Particle Nature of Matter.
- Explain and apply Atomic Structure.
- Explain and apply The Periodic Table.
- Explain and apply Reading an Element.
Re-read any section above where you hesitate, then try the worked example again without looking.
