1. The ACET Reading Challenge ๐
ACET passages are known for being dense, academic, and sometimes abstract. You might encounter philosophy, literary criticism, or hard sciences.
Survival Guide
- Don't get stuck: If a sentence is confusing, keep reading. Context often clarifies it later.
- Focus on structure: Identify the main argument and how paragraphs support it.
- Ignore jargon: You don't need to know every technical term to answer the questions.
2. Active Reading Strategy โก
Passive reading won't work here. You need to attack the text!
- Skim first (30s): Read the first and last paragraphs to get the main idea.
- Map the text: Note what each paragraph talks about (e.g., "Para 1: Intro/Thesis", "Para 2: Counter-argument", "Para 3: Evidence").
- Anticipate questions: While reading, ask yourself "Why did the author include this detail?"
3. Question Types & Tactics ๐ฏ
Main Idea / Primary Purpose
Check the thesis statement (usually end of intro) and conclusion. Avoid choices that focus on specific details.
Inference
"It can be inferred that..." - The answer is NOT stated directly but is logically supported by the text.
Tone & Attitude
Look for adjectives and adverbs. Is the author objective, critical, enthusiastic, or sarcastic?
Detail / Fact
Go back to the text! Do not rely on your memory. Find the exact sentence.
